Utilities
There are several utility connections you may have to make. If you rent an apartment, not all of these will apply.
Electricity and Gas
The company servicing our area is P.G. & E. (Pacific Gas & Electric). You will need to establish an account with them. They will request a deposit of $100.00 unless someone who has had a satisfactory account with them for one year will co‑sign for you, verifying that they will stand good for any delinquency on your part.
Telephone
If you would like to get service to your home or apartment prior to coming to Fresno, contact SBC and establish an account. You may also want to inquire about whether or not you qualify for their Universal Lifeline Telephone Service, "a discounted basic phone service available to eligible customers." There are a variety of long distance calling options available. You may sign up with a long distance carrier (popular ones are AT&T, MCI, and SPRINT - but there are many others) or you may choose not to have long distance phone service on your phone line and use a calling card. You can save a significant amount of money if you shop around for the best service to fit your needs when it comes to long distance service.
